"There is plenty of water, fish and beautiful nature to explore"

Simon Ekdahl is a father of small children, entrepreneur and angler from Matfors, about two miles west of Sundsvall. Together with some friends, he founded Team Baitbox in 2010, one of Sweden's largest fishing channels on YouTube that also manufactures popular fishing lures. According to him, he's not the best in the bunch at fishing, but he's definitely the luckiest when it comes to catching fish on the hook.

What is your favorite place to visit in Destination Sundsvall?

- The whole Lögdö wilderness is really cozy I think. There's lots of water, fish and beautiful nature to explore. If you haven't been there, it's definitely an area worth discovering.

If you want to eat like Simon Ekdahl. Which restaurant in the destination and which dish should you choose on the menu then?

- Then you go to Bloco and get something from the meat menu. The raw steak or maybe a steak taco. Bloco has a really nice atmosphere, the food is good and you almost always meet people you know there.

"We had the craziest fishing and hooked 90 fish in one morning"

If you go on a picnic. Where are you going and what do you have in your basket?

- Then I take my family or friends with me and go out into the forest to some cozy forest lake. Maybe in Attmar's fishing conservation area. With me I have a frying pan, minced meat, hamburger buns, onions, chili, cheese, mayo and lightly salted chips. Smashburgers with chips are a really simple but luxurious dish that you can easily prepare in nature.

What is the best viewpoint here in the destination?

- Södra berget is great if you want to look out over Sundsvall city. However, if you want to see more nature and get out into the forest, you should go to the top of Uvberget in Huli, with a view of Hulitjärnen. It's a gem that's definitely worth a visit.

What is your best fishing memory from Destination Sundsvall?

- A fantastic memory from Fäbodtjärn in Timrå was when my Baitbox colleague Jens and I were there a year after the pimping premiere. We had the craziest char fishing we have ever been involved in. I think we had hooked a total of 90 char in one morning. It was just incredible. You just put the pole in the hole and it just went off. I've never experienced anything like it before or since.

Simon tips - good fishing waters in Destination Sundsvall

Where do you find the best pike fishing?

- If you want pike, I would recommend Lake Marmen and the part of Ljungan that goes from Marmen and up to Matfors power plant. There is incredibly good pike fishing here. Marmen is best fished from a boat in summer, or with a rod directly from the ice in winter.

If you want to fish for trout, char or rainbow trout, where do you go?

- For trout, I would recommend one of the lakes in the Attmar fisheries management area. Åtjärn is close to the heart, with beautiful scenery and several shelters in various places around the pond. If you want a chance at both char and rainbow trout, Stora and Lilla Åstjärn are a good option, especially in winter when you can fish. If you are only looking for rainbow trout and you want it easily accessible by car, I would say Ängomstjärn in Matfors. There are bridges around the entire facility that make it easy to move around even for those in wheelchairs.

If you are hungry for Medelpads landscape fish perch. Where should you fish then?

- Perch can be found just about anywhere, but if you want big perch, you should go to Rännösjön in Matfors. Over the years I have had really big ones on the hook there, but of course I haven't caught the biggest ones, that's always the case. But I am convinced that there are perch of well over two kilos swimming there.
