PICNIC DESTINATION - FOOD BREAK WITH NATURE ENJOYMENT
In Destination Sundsvall, it's almost hard not to find a perfect picnic destination with nature enjoyment. Bring your friends, family and some coffee of course. Nature does the rest.
- Norra Berget in Sundsvall is a unique experience with its central location and historic atmosphere. There are easy walking trails in the forests and picnics can be set up at Bureplatsen, near the animal gardens or on the mountainside overlooking the whole of Sundsvall.
- Stornäset Nature Reserve on Alnön is located on a headland out into the sea. There are large beach meadows where many birds rest and nest. This makes the area a good place for birdwatching. Stornäset has been adapted for accessibility so that as many people as possible can enjoy the beautiful nature and birdlife. It is easy to get around with a wheelchair or pram, and there are various rest areas and hiking trails. The fine sandy beaches are popular for sunbathing and swimming in summer.
North Mountain
Set up your snack by the animal gardens or by the rocks towards Stenstan.
- Söråker's promenade provides a nice and very accessible experience of Klingerfjärden. There are benches, piers and beaches to pause at.
- The island of Klampenborg is a somewhat hidden gem nestled in lush deciduous forest. There are footpaths and picnic areas and memories of an entire sawmill community that has long since fallen silent.
- The fishing trail otherwise leads you through the Ljungan valley with many nice resting places all the way from Dingersjö to Viforsen. Choose the route according to your energy for the day. Sturdy shoes and a little stamina are required, but the efforts are worthwhile. Grenforsen is an excursion tip for those who do not want to walk so far. From the parking lot, the path leads you down into the ravine landscape. Sit on a rock in the rapids and cool your feet, then set up a picnic at the picnic area.
Mjällådalen

Nolby strömmar is another well-signposted and beautiful excursion destination along Ljungan. The footpath from the parking lot is not very difficult, but be prepared for a couple of steep sections. If you then continue to Nolby högar you will find traces from previous generations. Enjoy the landscape and the views and see one of Sweden's largest burial mounds.
- Hiking in Jämtgaveln Nature Reserve gives you a sense of what the forests of Norrland used to look like. There are over two miles of trails, several overnight cabins, rest areas and beautiful waterways. The walking trail of just over four kilometers is a nice excursion for those who have a little extra energy in their legs. Otherwise, there are accessible paths from the parking lot for those who want a shorter visit that still provides a
nature experience. - Mjällådalen is another large nature reserve with good opportunities for outdoor activities. Several hiking trails lead around the area and the terrain is sometimes quite hilly with high ridges and a lot of up and down. The trails often go close to the river and offer nice views and resting places. The river is also popular for fishing.
Backpacking tips
Soup is the perfect picnic food. Spice it up with different toppings.
Hamburgers in all forms are very easy to grill and usually go down well with everyone.
Tacos are also great outdoor food. Heat meat, fish or the veggie option on the grill and serve all the sides cold.
Instant noodles are smart. All you need is a little hot water.
Pancake rolls are usually a real hit.
Grilled sandwiches are both delicious and fun to make outside. Bring a sandwich iron.
Coffee filters are perfect to put your sandwich or hamburger in.
Ice cream in a thermos is great. Stick ice creams as they are or loose ice cream to scoop up also works well.
Bakeries and pastry shops are lovely features of excursion destinations if you don't want a packed lunch.
