Specsavers is the world’s largest privately owned optician company and was founded in 1984 by Doug and Mary Perkins. In fact, the idea of starting the company was born on the couple’s table tennis table in their house on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel. Perkin’s idea that everyone should be able to afford glasses was to revolutionize the British optician market. The concept of affordable but stylish glasses was unique in the late 80s. Specsaver’s market leader is now with over 600 stores in England.
Specsavers established itself in Sweden in 2004 by purchasing about 50 stores from the chains Blic and Two Blue. Today there are over 100 Specsavers stores in the country with more resorts opening soon. When Specsavers arrived in Sweden, there were strong reactions in an industry that had no prior focus on price. With Europe’s highest prices on glasses, however, there was a need for cheaper products and Specsavers was welcomed by customers.
Before Specsaver’s establishment, Sweden was also the country in Europe where customers changed their glasses rarely. With Specsaver’s glasses revolution, this trend has been broken and our customers are switching glasses on average after 1.3 years while the industry average is around 3 years.
By offering great prices, good service and high professional knowledge at our opticians, Specsavers gives its customers value for the money.
