The Park Friend Gift is located in the centre of Sundsvall. The fountain in the heart of the park was created by Sofia Gisberg, a famous personality from the city. Her design received green light from the City Council on 14 June 1884, and on 25 August 1886 the fountain was completed. It became reality through contributions from A P Hedberg. At this time, public art was an unusual sight in smaller Swedish cities and was regarded as something very prestigious. The fountain of the Friend Gift was to become Sundsvall’s equivalent to Molin’s fountain in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm. This fountain sculpture celebrates Sundsvall’s rapid growth in the late 19th century. When it was opened in 1886, Sundsvall had become one of the largest sawmill regions in the world. Between 1850 and 1900, the city's population increased more than five times. It is the expansion of this time period, its causes and results that the fountain of the Friend Gift symbolizes.
