On the Halland coast lies the magnificent and beautiful “Badhotell Klitterviken.” Or well… it was magnificent when it was built once upon a time. Now, at the end of the 1920s, the spa hotel, after years of declining guest numbers, has definitely seen better days.
However, this is a fact that the pompous owner Estrid (Helena Aspeflo) stubbornly refuses to acknowledge. In her world, Klitterviken still shines, and she does everything to keep the illusion alive. She constantly pushes her henpecked husband Hubert (Håkan Klamas) to do everything they can to survive and, above all, maintain the facade of an exclusive spa hotel, even though the walls tell a completely different story.
It’s the era of prohibition and counter-literature, and a considerable amount of German schnapps is being smuggled across Kattegatt. The hotel owner Hubert has, therefore, behind his wife's back, made a deal with one of the West Coast's biggest smuggling kings, Konrad Stålberg (Daniel Träff), to earn some extra money. A large shipment of smuggled spirits has been delivered to the hotel overnight and is now to be funneled further.
The whole affair would likely go quite smoothly if it weren't for the fact that Estrid has booked a wake at the hotel that same day for the wealthy widow Stråhle (Ewa Roos), whose late husband was the chairman of Halland's temperance committee. The widow has also promised to donate a substantial amount of money to the hotel, provided that the wake proceeds quietly and respectfully.
The owners' daughter Alfrida (Jeanette Capocci) also suddenly appears at the hotel. Normally, she resides in Gothenburg, but now she is on a highly personal mission – to uncover her suspected unfaithful lover. That she has also recently lost her job and burned most of her parents' money at the city's jazz clubs and dance spots… well, those are details she has been careful not to share with her mom and dad. Naturally, the problems don’t wait. Pastor Livhed (Mikael Riesebeck), who is to conduct the memorial service, turns out to have narcolepsy and falls asleep at every opportunity. The local postman Dag-Otto Flink (Jojje Jönsson) shows up to “help” but ultimately doesn’t know whether he is a postman, smuggler, waiter, or priest. The talkative and filterless Rut (Annika Andersson) and her mumbling, stumbling, and bath-hungry husband Ragnar (Mikael Riesebeck) check into the hotel and, of course, become involuntarily embroiled in the mess. With a crumbling spa hotel full of smuggled spirits, a corpse gone astray, threatening spirit police, far too many priests, and a coffin that never seems to contain what it should – the circus is soon total!
It is going to be a damn funny salty seaside farce where it is far too cramped in the coffin!
